Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

[This is for people who have seen the movie. I am not narrating the story of the movie here - rather sharing my after-thoughts]

Is there a Raj in each Suri? This is what struck me when I was watching the movie. Is it possible that a reserved person like Suri ever, no matter how hard he tries, be like Raj? But then I thought - there is this one self that we are, there’s this another person that we want to be and there is this third person that the world wants us to be. Our whole life goes in aligning ourselves with what we are, what we want to be and what others want us to be. Suri’s character was a depiction of this state. Raj personified what he ‘felt’ Tani wanted him to be. The Suri-from-Panjab-Power was what the world wanted him to be. And in between these two somewhere there was the real Suri.

It looks almost impossible how the same person can play both the roles (in the movie). How much can a person love someone so as to change to such an extent! Or was this what Suri always wanted to be at some corner of his heart – this just gave him an outlet? When, Vinay Pathak asks SRK to be Raj forever, SRK says that Suri cannot change (I don’t remember what exactly he said – but this is the gist if it). This shows the inertia – the importance he gives to his perceived image. Suri was always seen as an erudite, nerd person. That had become part of his self. He was ready to be a different person with a different name but was not ready to change himself as Suri – I know, this probably is too confusing and may not even make sense. These are my thought strung into words. The thoughts are way too sketchy.

Now let’s take the movie at its face value. The ending was too gripping. My mailbox was spammed with the story of the movie almost a fortnight before its release. Yet, till the last moment (almost), it was not clear how the movie is going to end. I found the movie's ending similar to Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam's. The heroine gives in to the sacrifices of her husband (in both the movies).

Acting of SRK was "A1" :). When I read the story in the mail, I was wondering how can Tani not recognize her husband! But considering the fact that SRK acted brilliantly in both the roles and also that they had hardly seen each other properly, it was well digestible. Vinay Pathak did full justice to his role. Anushka Sharma was good - the aesthetically shot scenes of hers were nice :-P

The music is good. The “aaa” (alap) which comes in between the song ‘tujhme rab dikhta hai’ looks like a direct copy of “aaa” (alap) in ‘aao huzoor – lounge remix version’. ‘haule haule’ reminds of Adnan Sami- Amitabh Bachchan song – ‘maula kabhi mujhe chhodna’. The choreography was good as well. ‘Dance pe chance’ could have been better choreographed given the lyrics and the situation of the song. Kajol looked amazing – perhaps, I am a bit biased here. Looks like there is some rift between Yash Raj and Amitabh Bachchan – ‘hum haii rahi pyar ke’ didn’t have any Amitabh Bachchan sequence!

All in all – the movie was a good watch. It, however, cannot be compared to a milestone like DDLJ. The movie is a typical bolywood masala movie with a dash of grayness. BTW, I was thinking shouldn't "ban di" be one word - "banadi"?

Cheers!

exactly.... would like to refer to an inteview of srk being aired yesterday on zoom tv.... he was claiming the same thing.... he and aditya had discussed this over and over and finally come to the conclusion that this was quite digestable as taani met her husband only in the evenings and that too reluctanclty....

also would like to say one thing, if someone complains about srk's over acting as raj - when an inherently unsmart man tries to act unnaturally smart, he almost always ends up being a bit oversmart.... :P

The movie had something new to show at least. The story was quite original though not great in content. I found the screenplay very gripping. The humors were very well inserted and the narration was wonderful.
But what really made the difference was shahrukh's acting. He acted in both of his versions with equal ease. This is one of his best performances. Anushka was very confident and I felt is much more talented than the over-hyped Deepika Padukone.
Overall the film has the feel good factor that remains with the viewer even after leaving the theatre.

Nothing much to say about SRK's acting...he is as brilliant as ever..I would rather appreciate Anushka's Acting...I think she did pretty well in that de-glam role.. and I fully agree about the feel good factor Pikul was talking about....

SRK was superb....yaa prashant u r absolutely right..ending of this movie was almost similar to the "Hum dil de chuke sanam " and the point u have mentioned that suri does want to change his perceived image for his wife--that thing i liked very much.. But i have one doubt how a character like suri act in both the role ("suri" & "raj").both the characters are completely opposite...is it possible in real life ??????
in my opinion if the character of raj was bit more polite.that would be much more relevant.Hhow a matured character like "Taani" falled in love with Raj very easily through this kind of cheap fliriting techniques???
nothing else.what u have mentioned that is the exact inner meaning of the movie.no doubt.good work prashant.keep it up.

Is there a Raj in every Suri........probably!
But is there a Suri in every Raj?
"Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" is the kind of candy floss predictable comedy/tragedy/drama that used to leave people wondering, when would we find our true love.
Or atleast that is what most people who have overly criticised the movie has said about it.
I cant disagree that Rab Ne was predictable and had an almost done to death typical hindi movie ending.
But does that necessarily make a movie bad?
These days there has risen this tendency to find a difference in everything.........that is good as long as it produces something new.
But what I donot understand is in order to appreciate something new why is it always necessary to criticise the old beaten track?
It is rather appealing if there is a predictable good movie than a movie which may be different but doesnot touch your soul.
Shahrukh is not the greatest actor in this country, right now ,that (for me) is Aamir(though Ghajini didnot do justice to him). Many say Hritthik is the best dancer though I say it is Shaheed. Both of the above mentioned ones are great actors too.Akshay Kumar is the King of Comedy and Action.Kudos to him.
But there is this certain quality in Shahrukh that makes him the biggest star, there is somewhere in him the soul of a very normal very middle class man which he can bring out even if he is overacting as he did in many of his movies or he is underacting as in "Rab Ne".
Rab Ne like Swadesh is one of the milestones SRK's career as far his acting is concerned.
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge it may be not but Rab Ne is still a simple sweet movie about a simple boring man who fell in love with a girl who incidentially is a victim of the same romantic delusions that SRK 's own brand of loverboy turns God movies have potrayed.
And let me tell you it takes a star a lot of guts to make fun of what had made him the star in the fisrt place.Raj of Rab ne is almost a mockery of SRK himself as he had been potrayed in numerous other movies eg.Badshah.
And he makes Suri win........finally the common boring man with a heart of gold wins over the over cantecarous baboon who incidentally had a heart of gold too.
But the movie really leaves you with the deeper feeling that every Raj maynot have Suri's heart and perhaps in the end when the lights are dim, when the bustle is out, when the dust has settled that is all that matters.
"
Har Janam nein Rang badalke khawbo ke pardein me hum khilte hain..........
Hum Hain Rahi pyaar ke Phir milenge Chalte chalte..............." on that same beaten old track!

The above cannot be more true!

Well it was a small budget movie shot in a very short time frame with a multiplex audience in mind...so i guess it did what it was supposed to do
